As NH generator installers, we know a thing or two about how to properly maintain a whole-house backup generator so that it performs optimally. We wanted to give you a friendly reminder to check on your generator, especially since the winter months are coming upon us quickly.
Here are a few home standby generator maintenance tips to get you started.
Stay on Top of the Oil
It’s crucial to check the fuel regularly to ensure the generator will kick on when the power goes out. If the generator is new, you will want to change the oil after the first 20 hours. After this point, the oil should be changed every 100 hours (or less).
Note: The generator should not be running when you check the oil. Make sure it has been off for at least ten minutes before messing with the fuel tank and oil levels.
Clean the Air Filter
During your inspection, take a look at the air filter. If it’s dirty, it’s time to replace it. Regardless of how dirty it is, it’s best to replace the air filter in your generator every 100 hours of operation.
Get Rid of Dirt and Grime from the Engine
Inspect the engine for any dirt or grease buildup. If it’s dirty, do not use a pressure washer. Instead, use an air supply to clear away the dirt and a rag to remove the grease.
Stop That Leak
Look for any signs of a leak in the backup generator. If you spot leakage, tighten any loose parts or schedule generator repairs right away.
Don’t Let the Spark Dull
Examine the generator’s spark plugs to see if they display signs of damage, carbon buildup, or oil residue. If you see carbon or oil residue, use a wire brush to clean the spark plug. Be sure to have damages repaired as soon as possible.
